Is Compensated Kidney Donation a Solution for Organ Shortage? Empirical Evidence from Iran

MORTEZA ZAMANIAN

Amirkabir University of Technology

Selling of a kidney from a living-donor is illegal in all countries all over the world, except for Iran where a regulated market has existed since 1987. The commonest critics of the opponents of conducting a kidney market are that paying for donation results in exploitation of the indigent donors, and discrimination against the poor patients. This paper addresses for the very first time this controversy using a unique data from the only existing regulated market in the world, and shows that a compensated kidney market provides an efficient solution free from ethical critics for organ shortage
